With more folks seeking natural alternatives when it comes to their food, household products, and healthcare, it’s no wonder the dental industry is following suit. Holistic dentistry sees the mouth as an integrated part of the body and considers oral health problems as they relate to total body health.
The mouth does not exist in a vacuum. The mouth is a microenvironment that mimics the health of your total body. Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth can be an indicator of and increase your risk for plaque and tartar buildup in your arteries? Did you know the same bacteria associated with gum disease have been found in the hearts of patients with heart disease, and in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s?
Holistic dentistry goes much deeper than just cleaning and fixing teeth. As part of our holistic philosophy, we provide safe removal of metal fillings, we don’t advocate the indiscriminate use of fluoride as it is a known neurotoxin, and we use only materials that are biologically compatible with your unique body chemistry. We are on a mission for total health and wellness, and we help our patients through education, prevention, and compassionate, personalized care.
Most folks don’t know that old metal fillings contain anywhere from trace amounts up to 50% mercury. Where we lacked scientific evidence in the past, we now know that mercury is very toxic to the human body and should never be used inside the mouth or anywhere else in the body.
Mercury is a known neurotoxin that can cause muscle weakness, poor coordination, numbness in the hands and feet, skin rashes, anxiety, memory problems, and trouble with speech, hearing, and eyesight. Mercury is more toxic than lead or arsenic. Mercury vaporizes easily, and inhaled mercury vapor is readily absorbed into the bloodstream. Metal fillings contribute more mercury to the human body than all other mercury sources combined.
Dr. DeFelice and our talented team have been providing safe mercury filling removal for over 25 years. We follow strict guidelines and practices to reduce mercury vapor exposure during removal. We use the “cut and chunk” technique while keeping the filling cool under a constant spray of water to reduce vapor exposure. High Volume Evacuation (HVE), a charcoal filter, and mercury scavenger are used at all times to eliminate vapor, and patients are protected with a rubber dam and oxygen mask to prevent inhalation. Positive ion generators are used in the operatory and a window is left open for maximum ventilation. We follow the Huggins protocol and the recommendations of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).
We provide nutritional recommendations that we’ve used to help patients remove mercury from the body for decades. We can also work with your Naturopath or Physician for detox treatments.
Whether you are merely concerned with mercury filling toxicity, or you’ve had chronic health problems for years and have been unable to reach a diagnosis from doctors, safe mercury filling removal can improve your health and your quality of life, not to mention ridding your mouth of unsightly metal for a more natural, seamless smile.
Adhering to strict guidelines for safe Mercury Filling Removal, Dr. DeFelice was able to restore the health, function, and aesthetics of this patient’s smile with safe, BPA-free composite resin fillings
In dentistry today there are over 5,000 materials used in the restoration of the teeth and oral cavity. Over the last 25 years the number of people in the United States with allergies and autoimmune disorders has been steadily on the rise. For some people, their autoimmune problems have been linked to mercury in dental fillings and nickel and beryllium in metals used for crowns. The immune-compromised and allergy-prone person can’t be too careful about what is put in their bodies.
We use the Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing (CMRT) to test for sensitivity to dental materials. The Clifford Test is an easy test that consists of a tube of blood being drawn at any medical lab to be sent to the testing center in Colorado, where the blood is tested for IGE and IGA antibody compatibility to over 5,000 dental materials.
Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing (CMRT) provides dentists with extensive information about their patient’s individual sensitivities so the least offensive materials can be chosen and used in their treatments.
Traditional dental implants are made of metal—titanium to be specific. While most cases are successful, the holistic community raises legitimate concerns of having metal in your mouth on an ongoing basis. It’s estimated that 4% of Americans have a titanium sensitivity which could cause allergic reactions or other biochemical disruptions. We are also concerned with galvanic toxicity that occurs when different metals in your mouth (old amalgam fillings and titanium implants for example) interact in a negative way. That’s why we’re happy to have a more biocompatible alternative with ceramic dental implants.
Ceramic dental implants are made from zirconia, one of the strongest naturally-occurring materials available. Ceramic implants provide the same longevity and strength as titanium, without the toxic side effects. Additional benefits include better prevention of plaque buildup, which reduces your risk of gum disease and infection, and improved aesthetics. Ceramic implants are white to match the color of your natural teeth, so you won’t have to worry about that dark line around the gumline or being able to see the implant through the gums in the front teeth. If you’re interested in dental implants, we would love to discuss your options with you.
At DeFelice Dentistry, we believe the materials we use in your mouth are important and should be carefully chosen to align with your body’s natural chemistry. Many traditional dental materials can cause adverse reactions for some patients, so our goal is find out which materials will work best for you before we use them.
We partner with the Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing lab to screen for systemic reactions to dental materials. We screen a wide range of materials divided into 36 treatment categories including fillings, crowns, implants, and orthodontics, as well as bone augmentation and sutures. Materials Reactivity Testing evaluates antibodies found in your blood to determine which materials may pose a systemic risk for you.
Oxygen is essential for cellular metabolism and renewal and can expedite your body’s natural healing process. Body tissues heal fastest when they are exposed to fresh air and abundant oxygen. Your body makes new cells all the time, particularly when you have a wound or infection. Oxygen therapy gives your cells the fuel they need to heal and can create a secure environment for prolonged healing. Because water and oxygen are already natural components in your body, the effects of oxygen therapy are long-lasting.
Oxygen therapy delivers 100% pure, medical-grade oxygen. When three atoms of oxygen bind together, they form ozone, the same matter that protects and nourishes our environment. Oxygen can be applied as ozone gas, ozonated water, or ozonated olive oil. This completely painless treatment works with your body’s natural functions to achieve a multitude of benefits.
Increased exposure to pure oxygen has been found to:
It’s very important for oxygen to be used in addition to conventional procedures and treatments because it’s not proven to treat any health problems on its own. If you have gum disease, have just had oral surgery, or have any other dental health problems, consider adding oxygen therapy to reduce healing time and boost immunity. Be sure to talk with Dr. DeFelice about recommended treatment for any dental needs you have and how ozone therapy might benefit your outcomes.
