At DeFelice Dentistry, we know the dental office isn’t your ideal place to spend your time. For millions of Americans, the fear and anxiety associated with the dentist is enough to prevent them from seeking the care they need. That’s why we do everything we can to make your dental experience as relaxed, comfortable, and pain-free as possible. Getting the care you need today is essential in preventing more painful and costly problems down the road. Whether you need help relaxing for a routine cleaning and exam, or want to complete all your dental work comfortably in one visit, we are happy to offer sedation options to help you get the care you need.
Sedation dentistry involves the use of a mild to moderate sedative during dental treatment to help patients relax. Sedation is great for a number of patients with varying needs, from dental anxiety to a bad gag reflex. Sedation is not the same as general anesthesia. General anesthesia is used to numb the entire body and “put you under” or put you to sleep. With general anesthetic, you need assistance breathing and monitoring proper heart function.
Sedation is designed to keep you generally awake and able to respond to the doctor but put you in a relaxed, dream-like sedated state. Some patients do relax enough to fall asleep, but you will be easily awakened. Sedation does produce some amnesic effects, so the details of your appointment will be fuzzy if you remember anything at all. With sedation, you can take a seat in the chair and your appointment will be over before you can say “aah”.
If you suffer from any of the following, sedation might be just what you need to help you get the care you deserve:
You will start to feel very relaxed, comfortable, and maybe a bit euphoric or lethargic, and your appointment will be over before you know it. With oral conscious sedation, we can perform routine cleanings and exams, as well as more major surgical and restorative procedures all in a single visit while you are completely comfortable. With sedation, you don’t have to take multiple trips to the dentist, you can get all your work done in a single visit!
Have you ever experienced the calming side effects of a slow, deep breath? Imagine incorporating that relaxing experience with your next dental checkup. Dr. DeFelice uses oxygen therapy to make a peaceful and serene environment.
Whether you get a bit anxious at the dentist, or you’d just like to make your visit as comfortable and beneficial as possible, consider asking about oxygen therapy. Many patients feel more energized and clear-headed after increased exposure to oxygen. Read more about ozone therapy here.
